Working Remotely in San Juan del Sur
Located on the Pacific side of Nicaragua, you find the small but vibrant San Juan del Sur.
Famous on the Central American backpacking trail for its legendary Sunday Funday pool crawl, there is definitely some partying going on here. But there is also a lot more to this postcard-perfect beach town.
If you're looking for an exotic, laidback surf destination that still has lots of fun stuff going on, this is a great place for working remotely.
The town itself is very walkable, with everything within walking distance besides the surf beaches. In the evenings, it's not difficult to find bussing bars with live music and DJs, and during the day, yoga is a very popular activity.
The town also offers some great weekend excursion possibilities, like the volcanic island of Ometepe and the colorful and cultural city of Granada.
Surfing in San Juan del Sur
When it comes to surfing, San Juan del Sur actually doesn't have any surf within walking distance. However, if you're looking for a bit more to do, once the surf session is over, San Juan del Sur is a great place to base yourself. Here you'll stay comfortably, with great access to one of the many surf beaches both to the north and south of the town.
To mention a few breaks, you have the at times busy but beautiful Playa Maderas A-frame, and the large beginner-friendly Playa Hermosa beach break. Both are within a 25-minute drive out of town. Besides these, there are an array of other breaks that will keep your stoke high.
Although there is decent public transport, the best way to ensure you easily reach the surf breaks is to either stay at one of the popular accommodations offering a surf shuttle or rent your own car.
The best time to visit depends on your skills. If you're looking for bigger waves, April to September are the go-to months. The rest of the year is better for beginners.
The best way to get to San Juan del Sur is to fly into Managua airport. From Managua, it's a 160 km drive. You can cover this road by chicken bus (this is what public transport in Central America is called), private shuttle or rental car.
